Getting Permission to Ride Motorbikes in the UK

Before you can tour around the British territory on an exciting two-wheeler, you need to be familiar with the following rules concerning the use of such a vehicle.

1. Tests are to be taken in order to be qualified to ride motorcycles.

In the UK, you should satisfactorily complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course before you can get a provisional motorcycle licence. But, if you are aiming to obtain a full permission, you need to pass a motorcycle theory and practical test.

2. A full car licence will do.

For those who have a full car licence, they can ride motorbikes of up to 125 cc and 11 kW power output with L plates. However, they will be required to complete a CBT course beforehand.

3. There is a separate licence for mopeds.

In the definition presented in the British constitution, a moped should have an engine capacity not exceeding 50 cc, weigh as much as or lesser than 250 kg, and have a maximum speed that does not exceed 31 mph (50 km/h). Now, to be able to legally ride one, here are the qualifications:

• be 16 years old or over
• own a provisional moped licence
• completed a CBT training

To get a full moped licence, you need to pass the theory test for motorbikes and the practical test for mopeds afterwards.

4. There are specific licences for various motorcycles.

• Light motorcycle licence (A1)
- Passing this exam will grant you permission to ride motorbikes up to 125 cc with power output of up to 11 kW.
• Standard motorcycle licence (A)
- In the test for this, you will be riding two-wheelers between 120 and 125 cc and capable of more than 100 km/h.
• Direct/Accelerated Access
- To ride larger motorbikes sooner, this certificate enables you to do just that. Passing it, though, requires you to do a practical test on a two-wheel transport with a power output of at least 35 kW.
